Project Overview
Leaf Gardens recently completed a transformative landscaping project in Chesterfield. This inner courtyard, surrounded on three sides by the client’s property, had untapped potential. The existing space featured decorative paving and steps, but the rest was a utilitarian mix of artificial turf and gravel with minimal planting. The client’s goal was clear: turn the uninspiring courtyard into a vibrant, inviting outdoor area for entertaining, relaxing, and enjoying nature. Armed with plans from a garden designer, Leaf Gardens brought the vision to life by creating seating areas, a water feature, gravel paths, and lush planting complemented by the client’s Gothic Arbour.

The Client’s Concerns
Having worked with Leaf Gardens previously on a smaller holiday let cottage project, the client already trusted the team. Their main concern for this larger project was ensuring the work would be completed to a high standard and in time for an Easter holiday letting. This trust, coupled with the team’s proven track record, alleviated any lingering doubts.
The Design Process
The design, developed by a garden designer, was presented to Leaf Gardens before work began. This collaboration allowed the team to focus on execution while ensuring the client’s vision remained central.
Project Timeline
The project spanned 12 weeks, from January to March. Despite challenging winter conditions, including snow, frost, and rain, the team stayed on schedule to meet the Easter deadline.
Ensuring Timeliness and Budget
Precise planning was key to overcoming weather challenges. By scheduling materials to arrive during favourable conditions, the team maximised efficiency. Darren, who handled scheduling and procurement, ensured every stage progressed smoothly.
Materials Used
To create a garden in harmony with the period-listed property, the team used high-quality materials:
- Derbyshire reclaimed stone walling and copings for timeless elegance
- Indian Sandstone for the paving
- EverEdge path edging for clean lines
- Yorkshire Cream Gravel to enhance the pathways
Challenges Overcome
The main hurdle was access. A narrow entrance, single-track road, and kinked driveway made material deliveries tricky. Additionally, the courtyard, once a farmyard, required significant excavation for planting beds. Despite these challenges, the team successfully filled skips and brought in fresh topsoil, ensuring a perfect planting base.
Client Benefits
The result is a stunning, fully functional garden that perfectly complements the property’s historic charm. The courtyard is now a space where the client can relax, entertain, and enjoy the outdoors year-round.
